A Mudra for Mental Health: Bhairava Mudra

Discover how practicing Bhairava mudra can soften the ego, calm an anxious mind, and bring your heart and mind into harmony. Try this simple mudra for mental health today.

Lately, I’ve been exploring a few new mudras during my daily meditation practice, and I must say that the Bhairava mudra is a real beauty!

If you have been looking for a simple yet transformative mudra for mental health, this ancient hand gesture packs a powerful punch. While the traditional theme of this mudra is to ‘destroy the ego’ – which admittedly sounds a bit harsh and intense – my personal exploration has revealed a much gentler reality. Rather than violently destroying the ego, practicing Bhairava mudra beautifully softens and calms the mind, easing it into a profound state of inner peace.

I firmly believe there is a valid place for both the mind and the ego in our daily lives. However, both operate at their absolute best and finest when they are in balance with a heart-filled energy. This mudra brings about that necessary balancing act between heart and mind.

Named after a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with transformation and overcoming limitations, Bhairava mudra carries rich spiritual and psychological themes:

  • Dispelling Negativity: Invokes a steady presence that helps clear lower-nature negativity and internal blockages.
  • Balancing Brain Hemispheres: Promotes peaceful communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain, harmonising rational thought with creative intuition.
  • Releasing the Ego: Encourages you to soften ego-driven control, helping to embrace life exactly as it is.
  • Aiding Deep Meditation: Acts as a powerful anchor for mindfulness, actively lowering stress and calming the mind.

From a holistic mental health perspective, the simple act of holding a mudra can significantly shift our psychological state. Bhairava mudra acts as a practical tool for emotional regulation and nervous system support.

Practicing this gesture stimulates nerve endings in the hands that influence the autonomic nervous system.

Mental exhaustion often stems from internal conflicts. This gesture minimises conflicting dualities, fostering a sense of completeness and mental stability.

One of the best aspects of this practice is its simplicity. You can easily introduce it into your current meditation or breathwork routine:

  • 1. Find Your Posture: Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or a chair with your head and spine comfortably straight.
  • 2. Position the Hands: Place your left hand down in your lap, palm facing upward. Rest your right hand directly on top of the left hand, also palm facing upward, creating a gentle cup shape.
  • 3. Relax and Settle: Keep your fingers relaxed.
  • 4. Hold the Space: Close your eyes, steady your breath. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes to begin with, slowly extending the duration as your comfort grows.

The Feminine Expression of Bhairava Mudra: Alternatively, to experience the fierce feminine expression of this mudra, simply swap the placement by resting your left hand on top of your right hand. Swapping the hands interchanges and balances the masculine (Pingala) and feminine (Ida) energies within the subtle body.

Rather than violently destroying the ego, practicing Bhairava mudra beautifully softens and calms the mind, easing it into a profound state of inner peace.
