What actually happens when you meditate?

Meditation is called a 'practice' for a reason—it becomes easier with time. It's about letting go of outcomes and stepping into the present.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you take a moment to quieten your mind? For me, it’s something magical, sacred and wordless. However, it wasn’t always easy, especially in the beginning.

When we make time to meditate and quieten our mind’s chatter, several positive changes occur:

  • We make space within: Creating inner space allows for personal growth and shows us how our mind’s voice is mostly not helpful! This article explains the science behind meditation.
  • We expand: Our perspective shifts and broadens and we start seeing things in a more positive light.
  • Anxieties and worries fade: Our concerns diminish – it’s super helpful for anxious types (guilty!). This article explains it a bit more.
  • Our breath softens and slows: We breathe more deeply and calmly, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which tells our body to relax and shift away from ‘fight or flight’ mode.
  • Our body relaxes: Tension melts away. Read this Mayo Clinic article to understand what actually happens.

Meditation is called a ‘practice’ for a reason—it becomes easier with time. Every day, my meditation looks different depending on the day, energy levels and life responsibilities. It’s about letting go of outcomes and being present with what’s there—a valuable lesson in itself.

Making space within through meditation invites new possibilities and a higher vibration of energy. We move away from the mind’s chatter and step into our heart space, where we can connect to our soul’s guidance – also called intuition.

When we become more in touch with our heart, we can hear our intuition more clearly. This leads to:

  • Better decision-making: We start making choices that align with our true selves. This article explains how.
  • Increased positivity: Problems seem smaller, and solutions become more aligned and attuned.

A consistent meditation practice can be truly life changing…

I’ve maintained a regular meditation practice for almost 30 years, and it has profoundly improved my life. There are too many benefits to list here, but suffice it to say, meditation has been transformative for me.

Meditation is so integrated into my life that I don’t think about fitting it into my day; it’s simply a part of it. Because it’s such a help, I look forward to my ‘cushion time’.

I’m excited to share some of the techniques I’ve learned from my teacher of 22 years, in a short course I’ll be launching soon (2024). If you’d like to learn a simple way to meditate, breathe, and use mudras, you might be interested. Register your interest HERE.

Love and mudras,

Please note: mudras are simple ancient tools for exploring energies of heart, mind and body and are not presented here as an alternative to professional medical advice.
